    Anemia in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus as a Risk Factor for the Presence and Severity of Microvascular Complication-Diabetic Retinopathy

    Aims and objectives: To estimate the prevalence of anemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. To assess the role of anemia as a risk factor for the presence and the severity of diabetic retinopathy among the diabetic in-patients and out-patients of Sree Balaji Medical College & Hospital, Chennai. Methods: Single centre, cross-sectional analytical study was done. 100 patients who met the inclusion, as well as exclusion criteria, were included in the study. The study was conducted among the in-patients as well as out-patients of the Department of General Medicine, Sree Balaji Medical College & Hospital, Chennai. Results: In our study, we observed that diabetic individuals had a higher prevalence of anemia of 69% when compared to the general population.
